The Golden Jaguars moved one step closer to qualifying for the Gold Cup Preliminary stage, defeating hosts Bermuda 2-0 Saturday at the Dame Flora Duffy National Sports Centre, Devonshire Parish.
Guyana’s starting XI for the fixture comprised Kai Mackenzie-Lyle, Jaylen James, Bayli Spencer Adams, Liam Gordon, Jonathan Grant, Nathan Moriah Welch, Elliot Bonds, Emery Welshman, Jeremy Garrett, Leo Lovell and Omari Glasgow.
Following a scoreless first half, defender Liam Gordon opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a first-time strike from inside the left of the six-yard box after racing onto a flicked pass.
Fellow defender Jeremy Garrett made it 2-0 in the 58th minute, controlling a flat right side cross unchallenged inside the centre of the area, before firing his effort into the left side of the net.
In terms of the official statistics from Concacaf, Bermuda recorded 12 shots compared to Guyana’s 11. The hosts also secured 53% possession while completing 271 of 337 passes. On the other hand, Guyana completed 270 of 290 passes, whilst also tallying nine corner kicks compared to Bermuda’s five.
With the win, Guyana climbed onto nine points and strengthened their grip on second place in the group.
Bermuda remains on four points in third place. In the previous meeting of the teams, Guyana prevailed 2-1 at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Overall, Guyana improved their record against Bermuda to three wins, one loss and a draw.
The Guyanese will now oppose cellar occupant Montserrat who sit on three points on March 28th at the Wildey Turf Stadium, Wildey, Barbados, after the match was shifted from the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
