(Trinidad Guardian) “They shouldn’t ah kill my husband,” cried Mala Bajnath-Singh yesterday as she recalled how her husband Narine Singh was fatally shot on their bed around midnight on Sunday.
The mother of one told reporters her husband’s murder has left her confused and heartbroken as he was a good person and he had no enemies.
She was fortunate to escape unhurt as she was lying next to him on the bed at the time of the shooting.
The assailants stood outside their home at Charlo Village in Penal, and shot Singh through the bedroom window.
She and her husband lived in a downstairs apartment of a two-storey family home.
The bed is close to the window. She recalled that they went to sleep around 9 pm on Sunday. But, she said that at midnight, they awoke after hearing a noise.
With tears rolling down her cheeks, she recalled, “Somebody, was opening the louvres. I was right next to him (husband). As I tell you, as he (husband) say who is it, you only hear the gunshot.”
She heard about five gunshots, but she did not see the suspects and nothing was stolen. CCTV footage, however, showed two people running from the scene.
She said her husband was bleeding from wounds to his rib area and he died on their bed. She did not think the assailants were trying to break in to their house.
Baffled as to why her husband was killed, she sobbed, “I have no idea. He don’t bother nobody. Everybody in the area say he is a quiet man. He is talk with everybody.”
She said her husband neither drank alcohol nor smoked cigarettes.
Bajnath-Singh said once her husband was not working, they were always with each other and did everything together.
Recounting how they spent the day together on Sunday, she said, “Over 30 years me and he live together, and we never argue, we never cuss one another. We always live good. I always tell my family he always with me and he always living good. It hard…they shouldn’t do that, that so wrong.”
Lamenting the crime situation, she said there were too many murders in the country and the perpetrators not being arrested.
“Crime not good at all, too much ah thing going wrong, too much ah thing and nothing being done about it. People just killing people and they getting away with it and that is not nice. You murder somebody and get away, no, and that is what is happening right now in this country. It is unfair. An innocent man just die just so, that is not nice,” she said.
Expressing a lack of confidence in the criminal justice system, Bajnath-Singh added, “I don’t think I go get no answers. I don’t think so, no, not at all… I telling you that because plenty people dying. I does be watching…and I does not see nothing come out of it. We not getting enough justice in this country, not at all.”
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 have not yet ascertained a motive.
Investigations are continuing.
