Shabika Spencer, a 39-year-old clothes vendor of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was yesterday jailed for cannabis trafficking.
Spencer appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan where the charge was read to her. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 years 9 months imprisonment and fined $7.9 million.
Spencer was nabbed in Georgetown with a quantity of cannabis. According to a police press release, at about 17:45 hours on Wednesday, a team of police ranks headed by the officer in charge of the narcotics branch of CID Headquarters, acting on intelligence received, proceeded to Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, where the ranks intercepted a motor vehicle in which the suspect was an occupant.
During the search, the ranks observed a black suitcase that was next to the suspect in the back passenger seat, which contained several packages suspected to be cannabis that were wrapped in transparent plastic.
The woman was then informed of the offence allegedly committed and cautioned. She was arrested and taken to CID headquarters where the packages were verified as containing cannabis were counted and amounted to thirteen compact parcels.
The parcels were subsequently weighed in the suspect’s presence and amounted to 19.25 pounds or 8.73 kilogrammes.
