Holidays in Guyana traditionally involve cooking. During large family gatherings, it is easy to become distracted, leaving room for disaster.
Here are some tips from the Guyana Fire and Rescue Service to prevent fires.
– Do not leave cooking unattended.
– Keep children out of the kitchen, and make sure to watch them closely.
– Avoid overcrowding in the kitchen and doing too many things at once.
– If consuming alcohol, avoid using stoves and ovens.
– Turn off and unplug appliances when not in use, and ensure stoves are turned off before heading outside to fly your kite.
– Choose an open, clear area away from power lines, trees, and buildings to fly your kite.
– Use a kite string that is made of a non-conductive material, such as cotton or nylon.
– Do not use metal wire or fishing line, as they can conduct electricity.
– Do not fly kites near flammable areas or materials such as gas stations, propane tanks, or dry grass.
– Do not fly kites with metal parts or accessories, such as metal hooks or frames, as they can conduct electricity and cause sparks.
– Avoid flying kites with tails that have metallic or sharp edges, as they can pose a risk of electrical shock or fire.
– Always supervise children while flying kites and teach them to stay away from power lines and other potential fire hazards.
– Have a fire extinguisher or water source nearby in case of an emergency.
