A new champion will be crowned in the Milo Secondary Schools U18 football championships after Mackenzie High eliminated holders Wismar/Christianburg 1-0 in the quarterfinals yesterday at the Ministry of Education (MOE) on Carifesta Avenue.
Mackenzie High needled the defdning champs Wismar/Christianburg in the Linden derby via an Azizi Grant conversion in the 30th minute.
Meanwhile, Carmel edged Bartica 4-2 in extra time. Eon Daniels recorded a hat-trick in the eighth, 61st, and 113th minute, whilst Shem James netted in the fourth minute. For the losing team, Shawn Bobb, Ashton Dutchin, and Ezequiel Baldeo scored in the 17th, 60th, and 63rd minute respectively.
In another fixture, former champions Chase Academy overcame Ann’s Grove 3-2. Seon Cato registered a double in the 16th and 75th minute whilst Neeiaz Baksh found the back of the net in the 90th minute. For the losing team, Naron Jerrick scored in the 35th minute while an own goal in the fourth minute added to the score.
The winner of the event will pocket $300,000 towards a school project and the championship trophy, with the second, third, and fourth place finishers walking away with $200,000, $100,000, and $75,000 respectively for a school initiative and the corresponding accolade.
The event is sponsored by Nestle (Milo) via Massy Distribution. It is sanctioned by the Ministry of Education and supported by the Guyana Football Federation. The other sponsors are GINMIN, GENEQUIP, and MVP Sports.
