Kwakwani Untouchables ‘A’ won the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF) National Women’s 3×3 Championship, which was hosted on Saturday at the Burnham Court, Parade ground, Georgetown.
This was disclosed by an official release from the federation.
According to the correspondence, a round-robin format was used to determine the winner of the tournament.
Kennesha Leacock who was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, propelled her side to an 11-9 overtime victory in their final group match against Linden Raiders which secured the title following an unbeaten campaign. The match was tied 9-9 at the end of regulation time. The victorious Kwakwani Untouchables ‘A’ team comprised Leacock, Shania Sears, Natalya Clarke and Malia Samuels.
Meanwhile, Kwakwani Untouchables ‘B’, whose quartet comprised Sherel Leacock, Rihanna Archer, Brianna Benjamin and Lenasha Mohamed, finished in second position, having lost only once to the eventual tournament victors.
President’s College participated with two teams, while the University of Guyana Trojans was the other participant.
“With Guyana’s women’s side qualifying to compete at the June 23 – July 8, Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in El Salvador, the tournament was also held as part of team selection and preparation, “ the release stated.
Meanwhile, GBF President Michael Singh praised the players for displaying quality play in the 3×3 format, noting that the federation intends to focus a large part of its developmental agenda on female participation in the sport.
The top three finishers received trophies which were donated by former national women’s team captain Karen Abrams. W. Rambaran Services also provided support.
