Police in Regional Division No. 2 are investigating a ‘hit and run’ accident which led to the death of Mahendra Kissoon, a 46-year-old of Lot ‘K’ Land of Plenty Public Road, Essequibo Coast.
The accident occurred at about 7.10 on Saturday evening. It involved motor lorry #GLL 5654, owned by Golden Fleece Investment and was being driven at the time by Parasram Wellington, a release from the police said.
Enquiries disclosed that the victim and his granddaughter went to purchase hot dogs a short distance away from their home. The motor lorry was proceeding in a southern direction on the eastern carriageway at a fast rate when the lorry struck the victim who was walking in a northern direction on the parapet. As a result, Kissoon was flung into the air and landed on the road surface.
The driver sped away leaving the victim bleeding on the roadway. Kissoon’s granddaughter ran home and informed family members who ventured to the scene and rushed Kissoon to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
The body of Kissoon is currently at the Suddie Mortuary awaiting a Post-Mortem Examination.
The lorry driver, Wellington, was arrested yesterday and the lorry was lodged at the Anna Regina Police Station. He is expected to be charged today.
