Guyana’s ‘Dynamite’ Desmond Amsterdam bowed out of the International Boxing Association’s World Boxing Championships in Uzbekistan yesterday losing his round of 16 clash against Spain’s Jalidov Gafurova Gazimagomed Schamilov 0-5.
Amsterdam, though he lost the light heavyweight contest on all five of the judges’ scorecards losing 26-30, 28-29, 27-30, 27-30 and 28-29, puit up a game display and must have been severely disappointed with the result.
Amsterdam, who won a bronze medal at the AMBC Elite Championships last year in Ecuador, took the fight to his opponent who was backpedalling for most of the fight and only came on strong towards the end of the fight.
The reigning Sportsman-of-the-Year had progressed to the round-of-16 with a split decision win against Bulgaria’s Kristiyan Nikolov at the Humo Arena last Friday.
Amsterdam was the last remaining hope for a medal by a Caribbean boxer at the championships.
Guyana’s other representative at the event, featherweight, Keevin Allicock lost his round-of-32 bout on Friday on points to Khalokv Abdumalik of Uzbekistan.
