On Tuesday the New Amsterdam Prison through is training programme in the field of joinery donated several desks and benches to the St. Aloysius Primary School, in Region Six.
According to a release from the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), Officer-in-charge of the New Amsterdam Prison. Senior Superintendent of Prisons Kofi David, said that the furniture-making is part of the continuous investment in the rehabilitation programme offered by the GPS.
The release said that Director of Prisons, (Ag) Nicklon Elliot added that the ability to take part in the numerous activities and programmes offered by the GPS is an essential part of demonstrating successful rehabilitation, which is linked to release decisions.
“As part of our mandate, we are required to expose prisoners to all the programmes in prison. As such, joinery classes at the various prison locations will not only strengthen the capacity to expose prisoners to more rehabilitation opportunities but will also enhance the lives of inmates,” the Prison Head said.
According to a release from the Guyana Prison Service Headmistress of the school, Darlyne Grant was appreciative of the donation.
