Aliyah Abrams is the new national 400m metre record-holder.
The two-time Olympian, erased the previous national record (50.71s) yesterday at the New Life Invitational in Freeport, The Bahamas, winning the quarter mile event in 50.20s.
Running out of lane seven, Abrams bested fellow podium dwellers, Charokee Young of Canada (50.45s) and Roxana Gomez of Cuba (51.01s). Abrams, 26, created history as the new queen of the 400m, bettering four-time Olympian, Aliann Pompey’s previous mark set in 2009.
In a post-race comment with this publication yesterday, the Brooklyn-born Abrams, stated that she was excited to compete and ran her best.
She stated that she was shocked at the timing and “seeing the time flash across the screen was a bonus,” for executing to perfection and being the new record holder “has brought me much joy.”
Meanwhile, Director of Sport, Steve Ninvalle congratulated Abrams on her history making achievement on behalf of the Honorable Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., and by extension, the Government of Guyana and stated that once her progression continues, she will be on the podium at major competitions this year and the next.
This year’s World Championship is scheduled for August 19-27 in Budapest, Hungary, while next year’s Olympic Games is scheduled for Paris, France in the summer.
