Forty-six-year-old Kwese Lewis was yesterday placed on $400,000 bail after falsely pretending that he was in a position to acquire Canadian and American visas for four persons.
Lewis appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on 22nd May, 2023 before Chief Magistrate Sherdel-Isaacs Marcus where the four charges of fraud were read to him.
It was alleged that between 22nd September 2022 and 21st February 2023, at Georgetown, he defrauded Evans Stoby and her grandson Jaden Williams of a sum of $152,000 by falsely pretending that he was in the position to acquire a Canadian visa. It was also alleged that between 20th August, 2022 and 23rd January 2023, at Georgetown, he defrauded Tonette Glen and her grandson Jeremiah Carter of a sum of $157,000 by falsely pretending that he was in the position to acquire an American visa.
It was further alleged that between 1st September, 2022 and 19th October, 2022, at Georgetown, he defrauded Andrew Nepaul of a sum of $2,045 US dollars by falsely pretending that he was in the position to acquire an American Visa for his brother Chris Nepaul, while on 10th August, 2022, at Charlotte Street, Georgetown, it was alleged that Lewis defrauded Chris Nepaul of a sum of $60,000 by falsely pretending that he was in a position to acquire an American visa for him.
The police prosecutor objected to bail on the ground that the defendant has four ongoing cases. Chief Magistrate Sherdel-Isaacs Marcus ordered the defendant to report to the Officer in Charge at the Brickdam Police Station every Friday, at 9:00 am. Bail was granted and Lewis is expected to make his next court appearance on 5th June, 2023.
