An 84-year-old pensioner was yesterday afternoon crushed to death by a Cevons Waste Management garbage truck at Buxton Sideline Dam, East Coast Demerara.
Dead is Elaine Williams, 84, of Lot 82 Sideline Dam Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
The incident occurred at about 12:15 hours at Buxton Side Line Dam.
Stabroek News was reliably informed that Williams, who was a broom vendor, was returning from the market at the same time a Cevons Waste Management truck was doing a routine pick-up at Side Line Dam. The truck was reversing while Williams, who is hearing impaired, was heading home.
An eyewitness who is also hearing impaired was at home at the time of the incident and tried to indicate to the driver that the truck was reversing into the woman. Her efforts were unsuccessful since the windows of the truck were rolled up. At the time of the pick-up, the porters were not positioned at the back of the truck to direct the driver. The eyewitness began running towards the street to stop the truck but the woman was crushed before she got there.
The porters exited the truck and ran away, deserting the driver. He said that he did not notice the woman walking behind the truck.
The pensioner suffered serious internal injuries and her legs were crushed.
Meanwhile, her family is calling for justice as they are contending that the woman didn’t suffer any illness but rather, was killed in the accident. Her son, Terrence, (only name given) told Stabroek News on Tuesday that his mother was a strong and healthy woman.
“It would have been better if she died by sickness but them kill she, them kill she like a dog, we are calling for nuff nuff justice”, he lamented.
