A prison officer died in an accident at Loo Creek on Sunday evening.
Dead is Terrence Gordon who was attached to the Lusignan Prison. He was involved in an accident at the Loo Creek area on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway.
According to a Guyana Prison Service (GPS) release, Gordon was a passenger in a motorcar when one of the tires blew out. This is believed to have caused the driver to lose control as the vehicle veered off the highway and overturned.
Both Gordon and the driver were rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex, where the prison officer died while receiving medical attention.
The GPS is also mourning the loss of 36-year-old, Chief Prison Officer, Patrick Perry, who died on Monday night on the Melanie Public Road, East Coast Demerara after he lost control of his motorcar (PAC 6465) while negotiating a left bend on the road.
He was based at Prison Headquarters, Georgetown, and resided at Lot 57 Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara
According to the police, investigations have so far revealed that Perry was proceeding west along the Melanie Public Road at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle when negotiating a bend on the road. As a result, the vehicle collided with a pile of sand which was on the parapet and toppled several times. Perry was flung out of the vehicle and landed on the roadway.
Meanwhile, Director of Prison, Nicklon Elliot, said both Gordon and Perry performed their duties well and did exactly what the GPS would expect from a prison officer.
Elliot expressed condolences on behalf of the Guyana Prison Service, to the families, friends, and colleagues of the two officers. He also sent prayers that all those grieving the two deaths will be granted comfort during this difficult and trying period.
Further, the Director, urged prison officers and other drivers to be more responsible and adhere to the road safety regulations when traversing the roadways.
