Despite the initial uncertainty surrounding his participation in the impending ‘Return of the Scorpio’ Pro/Am Card on June 3rd at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry has officially confirmed that he will be arriving on local shores on May 31st to enter the squared circle.
Dharry, 37, stated that he will be arriving “next Wednesday” ahead of his encounter with the Colombian pugilist Ronald Ramos for their eight-round Bantamweight fixture.
Probed if the postponement has afforded him the opportunity to be better prepared, he said, “I was already prepared for this fight before it was postponed. I’m also scheduled to fight in July and I already had three postponements this year so I didn’t want another one but it’s boxing and everything happens for a reason.”
The Fight Night was rescheduled from its initial date of May 21st due to Colombian pugilists Ramos and Luis Carillo failing to attain the requisite travel documentation to Guyana. This was confirmed by the organizers, Briso Promotions.
Asked if he feels pressured given that he has a mammoth fandom in Guyana to emerge victorious and erase the memories of the last round of his previous encounter, Dharry emphatically staged, “No. But, I always train hard and come prepared to win. I don’t need to do anything to erase the memory of the last round. The last round of my last fight was one of the most entertaining rounds of boxing in Guyana. The fans got to see me at my best and at my worst. I got knocked down twice, I got up like a champion and kept fighting and won the fight. So when life knocks you down, get up, and keep going.”
According to Dharry, he has sparred over 100 rounds in preparation for the encounter.”
Quizzed what he would tell his opponent given his state of preparation, Dharry said, “I don’t usually say anything to my opponent. We are both in training preparing to fight, and we’ll handle it in the ring.”
Dharry also expressed condolences to the family and friends of 19 students of the Mahdia Secondary School, who tragically perished last evening in a dormitory blaze.
He stated, “I want to say something first about the incident in Guyana with the children. First, I would like to say my condolences to the families and friends of all the children who lost their lives in the fire.”
The ‘Return of the Scorpio’ Pro/Am Card is regarded by many experts as the largest fight card in more than a decade and is expected to surpass the overall quality of the critically praised Patrick Forde Memorial Championships, which is the yardstick for a local boxing event.
All tickets purchased remain valid for the rescheduled date at the same venue. Tickets can still be purchased at the sole location of Hot & Spicy Creole Corner. The prizes are: VVIP $10,000, VIP $6000, Ringside $3000, and Stands $1000.
Five exciting professional bouts which will be headlined and co-headlined by Dharry and Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques respectively, as well as an amateur section of equal measure, are confirmed for the evening.
