Dominican Republic-based airline, Sky Cana, which was recently given the green light to operate on the Guyana/Canada via Dominican Republic route is gearing up for its inaugural flight tomorrow.
Sources told Stabroek News that the airlines will conduct its first commercial flight into Guyana with passengers from Canada.
The airlines is also gearing up to commence flights from Guyana to Houston, Texas via its hub in the Dominican Republic.
In a media invite, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri said the inaugural flight is expected to touch down at 11 am on June 1.
President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, is also scheduled to attend the ceremony of the inaugural flight on Thursday.
Sky Cana’s entrance to the Guyana market was announced in April by President Irfaan Ali who also informed, via his Facebook page, that he had met with the company’s CEO, Frank Diaz Gonzalez, at the Office of the President and that he welcomed the company to Guyana.
“Sky Cana made an application… They are going to start with a service that allows them as if you are doing a charter, and then other services that goes with the application.
They have not done that part as yet, but all of that will be something like any other airline that wants to operate within the route.
Everything that is required in the regulations for the operations of a service, including the safeguard of a bond, to protect passengers and the rest of it, will apply…,” Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, said in April at the announcement of the new services here.
President Ali had informed that Sky Cana is a Dominican Republic company that has 110 daily flights out of Punta Cana. Its fleet includes three (Boeing) AIRBUS A321s; four AIRBUS A320s; one AIRBUS A330-300, and one AIRBUS A330-200. Sky Cana will also fly to Houston.
Guyana has also been trying to interest Canadian carriers such as Air Canada and WestJet to enter the market. Currently Caribbean Airlines is the lone operator of direct flights between Cheddi Jagan International Airport and the Toronto Pearson International Airport.
