Fierce rivals Ann’s Grove and Buxton United played to a 1-1 stalemate in a tense East Coast Demerara derby when the KFC Elite League continued last evening at the National Training Centre, Providence.
In a fixture of very few chances, Kevin Barry handed Ann’s Grove the lead in the 20th minute, directing his powerful header into the back of the net, after rising above his marker to latch onto a cross from the right side of the field.
The score would remain unchanged heading into the halftime interval. However, Buxton United would equalise in the form of Samuel Johnson, as he found the back of the net in the 55th with a moment of individual brilliance.
Awarded a freekick outside the left of the penalty box, Johnson uncorked a powerful strike which settled into the right hand corner of the net.
The event continues tomorrow at the Eve Leary ground with a doubleheader. At 18:00hrs, Milerock will oppose Fruta Conquerors whilst Buxton United will match skills with Victoria Kings at 20:30hrs. Up to press time, the second encounter between Santos and the Guyana Defence Force was underway.
