The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) today expressed condolences to the family of Private Tevon Daymon who died this morning at 0745 at the Diamond Hospital, following an “unfortunate shooting incident” at approximately 0451 hours at Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri.
A GDF release said that preliminary investigations revealed that Private Daymon was shot by another rank while the two were performing security duties. He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he later died. The Guyana Police Force is investigating and the assailant is in their custody. This appears to be an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall discipline and professionalism of our ranks, the statement said.
A Board of Inquiry will be convened to probe the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Private Daymon.
The Chief of Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, Officers and Ranks extend condolences to the parents and family of the late Private Daymon and will ensure that all necessary support is given to the family at this time.
The police today issued the following statement:
Police are investigating the alleged murder committed on 24-year-old Tevon Damon, a private in the Guyana Defence Force attached to 21 Artillery Company and residing at lot 198 Block X Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara which occurred on 12th June, 2023 about 04:45hrs at Base Camp Stephenson by a 25-year-old male suspect who has since been arrested.
Enquiries revealed that the victim and the suspect became involved in an argument and the victim allegedly removed the magazine from the rifle he was carrying and hit the suspect to his head, causing him to receive injuries before running away. The suspect who was armed with an AK rifle and 30 matching rounds, discharged 27 rounds from his rifle in the victim’s direction causing the victim to receive injuries and fall to the ground.
The victim was escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Wilson at 07.09hrs. The body was escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting PME.
The suspect was handed over to police and is assisting with further investigations
