Voting underway in Local Gov’t polls

Voting got underway today in the 2023 Local Government Elections.

The Guyana Police Force today issued the following statement:

Top Cop and Team Visit Polling Stations

To ensure unhindered and incident-free voting during LGE

 

In an effort to ensure all polling stations during the Local Government Elections remains unhindered and incident-free, the Top Cop Mr. Clifton Hicken, Deputy Commissioner ‘Administration’ Mr. Calvin Brutus, along with Deputy Commissioner ‘Operations’, Mr. Ravindradat Budhram visited various polling stations.

Polling stations visited thus far were in the Municipality of Georgetown: St John Association of Guyana, St. John College, Bishops’ High School, and St. Barnabas Special School.

To supplement the current strength and to ensure a smooth voting process countrywide, ranks were deployed to the various polling stations across the country.

Throughout the day, the Top Cop and his team will be on the ground to oversee that the same is effectively done.

The Ethnic Relations Commission today issued the following statement:

As our nation votes in this Local Government Elections, (LGE) 2023, the Ethnic Relations Commission, (ERC), reiterates its call for all to work towards peace and harmony during and after this process.

 

The Commission also reiterates its call for all contesting parties, independent groups and individuals to accept the results as declared by the Guyana Elections Commission, GECOM.

This is integral for our people as we move forward as a thriving nation and for the fostering of peace and harmony.

 

The ERC takes this opportunity to remind that it is monitoring the traditional and non-traditional media and that anyone found making comments/posts which incite racial tension and violence will be made to face the force of the law.

 

In keeping with its constitutional mandate, the ERC can debar any political party or individual from contesting an election if found to be in transgression of the laws under the Representation of the People and Racial Hostility Acts. 

 

The Commission urges all to act responsibly and to ensure that peace and harmony continue to prevail especially during this election period.
