A twenty-two year old man, of Lot 36 First Street, Alexander Village, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday to answer to the charge of simple larceny that was laid against him.
It is alleged that Wazeen Husain, on Tuesday 13th June 2023, Georgetown, while being employed as a clerk by Navin Persaud, stole $766,000, property of Navin Persaud.
The court heard that the complainant and the defendant are known to each other since the defendant was employed by the victim on 13th June, 2023 as a cashier clerk at his Superbet Sports bar N&M Internet Café. The court further heard that about 17:02 hours, the defendant called the complainant’s sister, who was left in charge to oversee the business and collect the daily sales, to open the shop so he could use the washroom. The sister waited for twenty minutes for the defendant to return from the washroom but he did not. Checks were made in and around the yard but the defendant was nowhere to be seen. The complainant’s sister made further checks to the yard and also to the daily income statement and discovered $766,000 dollars missing. The business CCTV cameras were reviewed and the defendant was seen jumping the back fence of the said business place.
Efforts were made to contact him but proved futile. The defendant was arrested on the 16th June, 2023 at a house at South Ruimveldt. When the allegation was put to him he said, “I spent out the money.’’ Husain was charged with the offence of simple larceny. Police Prosecutor, Quincy Lacon, objected to bail yesterday. However, bail was eventually granted in the sum of $150,000 and the defendant is expected to report to the East Ruimveldt Police Station, once per month until the completion of this matter. The matter was adjourned to July 17th, 2023.
