Guyana’s boxing contingent arrived in El Salvador for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games yesterday without Kevin Allicock.

The featherweight was a late scratch from the team after he suffered a right knee injury while jogging on the final day of training on Sunday morning.

According to Technical Director of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), Terrence Poole, Allicock’s absence “is a setback for our team.”

Poole, along with Lennox Daniels, are the coaches on the CAC sojourn.

When contacted yesterday, the Tokyo 2020 Olympian stated that he was disappointed with the setback adding  that his injury was diagnosed as a torn LCL (lateral collateral ligament) which will require rest, icing and therapy. He said the healing process should take approximately a week before he can return to light training.

The 24-year-old who earned a bronze medal at the last CAC qualifier in Mexico in 2018, stated that he was confident of climbing the podium in El Salvador and is distressed to suffer the 11th hour injury.

Reigning Sportsman-of-the-Year, Desmond Amsterdam (light heavyweight) will spearhead the boxing team which also comprises, light welterweight, Joel Williamson and heavyweight, Emmanuel Pompey.

Poole and Daniels both stated that the three boxers “are all capable of medaling.”

“They are young and have the ability and the potential. If things work in their favour, I don’t see why they can’t medal,” Poole told this publication.

The opening ceremony of the 24th edition of the regional quadrennial championship event is scheduled for June 23.
