Guyana’s Shemar Britton and Jonathan Van Lange yesterday advanced to the next round of the singles competition at the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador but the men and women’s teams were eliminated Thursday night in the team events.
Britton, who has been impressive so far, gained a walkover from Luis Medina of Honduras in their round of 54 clash while Van Lange defeated Costa Rica’s Alejandro Montoya 11-9, 8-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-7 and 11-8.
The remaining Guyanese players all fell by the wayside with Jasmine Billingy losing 0-4 to the Dominican Republic’s Eva Brito and Natalie Cummings losing to Colombia’s Ana Isaza 2-4.
The other men’s players Elishaba Johnson and Christopher Franklin lost to Mark Dowell of Barbados and Trinidad’s Khaleel Asgaralli 0-4 and 2-4 respectively. The other female player Priscilla Graves will play today in the round of 32 against Clio Barcenas of Mexico while Van Lange will come o up against Puerto Rico’s Daniel Gonzalez and Britton will oppose Haiti’s Olivier Guerrier.
On Thursday the Guyana women’s team lost to Venezuela 0-3 while the men’s team lost 1-3 to the Centro Caribe Sports team with Britton defeating Heber Moscoso 3-1. The men’s team final will be contested between Cuba and Puerto Rico while the same two teams will contest the women’s team final.
