Guyana Defence Force (GDF) maintained their unbeaten record in the KFC Elite League Football Championship, dismantling Victoria Kings 6-0 on Saturday evening at the National Training Centre, Providence.
All six conversions from the army unit occurred in the second half, after the first period ended 0-0. However, a lighting failure on one of the mobile towers at the start of the second stanza impeded the resumption. The issue had started in the first half, as the lights in the right hand corner was not functioning properly, and blanketed that area in partial darkness.
Players from Victoria Kings displayed an initial resistance to the start of the second half due to the prevailing issue, which resulted in the referees having discussions with the captains of both teams. The incident lasted approximately 10 minutes. The fixture eventually recommenced after a segment of the lighting apparatus on the mobile tower resumed functioning.
GDF eventually opened the scoring in the 50th minute in the form of Ryan Hackett, who slotted home after latching onto a cross inside the penalty area.
Delroy Fraser doubled their lead in the 72nd, racing onto a through pass before slamming past the advancing goalkeeper. Kelsey Benjamin then converted from the penalty spot four minutes later to make it 3-0.
Benjamin got into the scoring act once more, completing his brace in the 79th minute after cutting in from the right side and finishing into the far corner.
A 5-0 score was then realised in the 82nd minute as Fraser skipped past two defenders on the right side of the field and rifled his strike into the back of the net. Hackett then sealed the outcome in the 90th minute, cutting in from the right side before blasting into the left corner.
Meanwhile, Victoria Kings and Buxton United played to a 1-1 result. Delton Peters scored for Buxton United in the 30th minute, whilst Colwyn Drakes equalised for Milerock in the 42nd minute.
