Curtis Edwards and Basdeo Sukoom appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to answer to the charge of larceny from several vehicles which they denied.
It is alleged that on 21st June, at the Marriott Hotel beachfront, Georgetown, Edwards stole one blue Samsung Galaxy Note 9 cellular phone valued $80,000, property of Jermaine Supio, one JBL headphone valued $10,000, one black Hurley haversack valued $30,000 and one silver Samsung laptop valued $60,000, property of Sandy Nawbatt.
The court heard that Supio and Nawbatt proceeded to the Georgetown Seawall in the vicinity of Marriott beachfront in a minibus. They secured their minibus, leaving the items mentioned in it. Upon returning, they observed that the items were missing. They matter was reported to the police and an investigation was launched. One of the two accused was later arrested and interviewed and he subsequently took the police to a location where the items were sold. The laptop was recovered. On the following day, acting on information, the police went back to the said location and Sukoom was arrested while being in possession of one of the victim’s bags. He was told of the allegation and cautioned after which he admitted to the offence.
It was also alleged that on 21st June, at Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, Edwards and Sukoom stole one black Dell laptop valued $300,000, one Susan handbag valued $3,500 and $32,000 cash, property of Rosanne Farley. The court heard that at about 17:15 hours, Farley proceeded to the National Park’s parking lot on Carifesta Avenue. Upon arrival, the victim parked and secured her car, with the listed items in the car, and departed with her daughter. Upon returning, Farley observed that the items were missing. The matter was reported to the Police and an investigation was launched and CCTV footage extracted. This led to the arrest of Edwards and Sukoom.
It was further alleged that on 1st June, at Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown, Edwards and Sukoom stole one black Apple Iphone 12 valued $120,000 and $100,000 cash, property of Deborah Yan. CCTV footage and eyewitness statements were obtained, which led to some of the items being recovered from persons that they were sold to. Police Prosecutor Quincy Lacon objected to bail based on the prevalence of the offence. Bail was refused and both defendants were remanded to prison by Magistrate Daly. The matters were adjourned to 17th July for statements.
