Pure damn nonsense

Dear Editor

Two pure damn nonsense (that phrase again) items making the rounds caught my attention.  The first had to do with the protest action outside a prominent law firm, calling for one of the principals to step aside from representing the accused mired in the alleged rape case (the gall of it)  and the principal seeking to justify,  in an act of appeasement to the protesters (Demerarawaves June 26). The protest action cuts at the heart of democracy where an accused has the right to defense, any and all defense. That is a non-negotiable position.  The justifying/appeasing was seen as an attempt at playing both sides of the coin, a sort of have bread but butter is equally important.

The right to legal representation is a human right and cannot be trampled on. The second pure damn nonsense item was about the perceived rift in the heartland of the opposition among key players, with claims of sidelining, de facto chair among other assumptions, which found its way as a national news item (NCN CH 11 June 27).  It is difficult to see the news value of exploiting issues which are not of national relevance or consequence.  All political parties have wrangling and in-fighting.  It just seem in bad taste, at a national level, to seek to benefit off it.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
