The newly refurbished National Racquet Centre will be the venue for the inaugural GTA One Guyana Open which serves off tomorrow at the Woolford Avenue facility.
With over $2 million in cash and prizes the tournament promises to showcase a high level of competition by a few former champions making their return to action who will be hard pressed by some of the big names in the sport locally. Among the contenders are 2022 men’s year end winner Donnie Anderson and eight-time doubles and singles champion Afruica Gentle.
There will be an opening ceremony at 15:00 hours followed by matches in the main draw.
The tournament is expected to run for two weeks and matches will be played Mondays through Fridays from 15:30 hours and games at weekend will start at 14:00 hours.
The competition is sponsored by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in collaboration with the GTA. There will be four categories: Men’s Open Singles, Ladies’ Open Singles, Men’s 35 singles and Men’s 45 Singles.
The GTA disclosed that best-of-three sets is the format for all categories.
The association has expressed its appreciation to the government for its continued support and steadfast dedication to the continued development of tennis in Guyana. The two-week long competition is being sponsored by the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in collaboration with the GTA.
