The widespread infectious flu-like symptoms that have been circulating in different areas for the past three months have raised more questions than answers, as many have been severely affected and it has been more severe than COVID-19.
Deodat Persaud on Friday in a Facebook post, highlighted the situation and shared his experience of when he contacted the flu. The post attracted many persons who related that they too were affected by the flu.
Persaud shared his experience with Stabroek News and described it as worse than COVID-19. According to him he was infected with COVID-19 twice and even though the flu shared similar symptoms with the virus, it’s not the same.
He explained that it all started one morning when he was awakened by vomiting that lasted for a few days then accompanied by diarrhoea. While the two symptoms began stripping his body of strength, it was then followed by a stomach ache and severe abdominal cramps. At this point, he stated that his stomach was only tolerating liquids. Persaud said that all these symptoms and activities happened within five to seven days. He further stated that a sudden intense body ache consumed him and his mind was just focussed on staying in bed. He then visited the doctor after the symptoms became overwhelming and was administered some pills that gave him relief. He said that the doctor related that recently many persons visited the hospital with the same symptoms.
While it took approximately two weeks for the symptoms to completely dissipate, Persaud’s mother also contracted the flu and the same cycle took its course.
The Ministry of Health has not issued any caution about a severe flu.
