It recently dawned on me that Vere T Daly’s A Short History of the Guyanese People is close to 50 years old and I am unaware of any more recent book on the history of Guyana that is suitable for younger readers/students (e.g. those in Grades 7 to 10). Daly’s book used to be (perhaps still is) an important source for many Guyanese teachers and students but, unfortunately, I don’t believe that there is even a revised or updated edition of this book. This is a huge and distressing lacuna in the learning resources available to young Guyanese and one which I sincerely hope that some of the current generation of Guyanese historians at the University of Guyana and other academic institutions are working assiduously to fix.
