It was another disappointing day for Guyana men’s hockey team at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games after they were beaten 2-3 by host nation the Dominican Republic (DR) yesterday in Santo Domingo.

The Guyanese were hoping for a victory following their opening game 1-4 lost against Trinidad and Tobago but they came up short against the home side.

Guyana had taken the lead in the 18th minute when Robert France scored from a field goal but the advantage was short-lived after Argeny Cabrera of the DR converted a penalty stroke in the 23rd minute to tie the scores at 1-1.

Jamarj Assanah placed Guyana into the lead once again when he scored from a penalty corner in the 27th minute but the Dominican Republic equalized two minutes later from a field goal netted by Luis Mora leaving the scores tied 2-2 at half time.

The home side then netted again in the 33rd minute when Jose Lopez struck home the match winner and ended Guyana’s hopes of advancing further in Pool B.

Guyana will now play tournament favourites Cuba tomorrow in their final Pool B match. Trinidad and Tobago will also face the Dominican Republic tomorrow also with both teams looking to advance to the playoffs.

The Cubans defeated Trinidad and Tobago 6-3 in the other Pool fixture yesterday.

Cuba lead the points standing with six points followed by Trinidad and Tobago and Dominican Republic on three points each and Guyana in the cellar position without a point.

The teams in Pool A are Barbados, Mexico, Jamaica and El Salvador. Barbados and Mexico are locked on three points each while Jamaica and El Salvador are yet to record a point. All four teams will be in action today.

The hockey squad is part of a large Guyana contingent at the Games being hosted jointly by the Dominican Republic and El Salvador.
