Defending girl’s champion Kwakwani commenced their title defence on a positive note whilst Covent Garden and Vryman’s Erven recorded wins in the Boy’s U18 section when the 16th edition of the ExxonMobil sponsored National School Basketball Festival commenced yesterday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Kwakwani crushed Schools Girls Combined 23-3. Lanesha Mohammed led the rout with eight points whilst Sherel Leacock chipped in with six points and eight rebounds and Rihanna Archer registered six points and four rebounds. For the loser, Kassidy Woolford netted two points.
Meanwhile, Covent Garden bested West Demerara 21-14. Jonathan Giddings led the way with 10 points whilst Yusuf Amaan tallied five points, eight rebounds, and six steals. For the loser, Michael Anderson and Jonathan Richards scored six and five points each.
On the other hand, Vryman’s Erven dismissed Skeldon Line Path 22-9. Nohoj Baird tallied six points and 10 rebounds, whilst Demitri Williams contributed five points and nine rebounds. For Skeldon, Isaac Rogers recorded six points and five rebounds.
In the other girl’s divisional encounter, President’s College downed the Bishops’ High 12-6. Shania Noble registered five points and as many rebounds, whilst Stephenna Perry added three points. For the loser, Tavishti Persaud scored four points, four steals and three rebounds.
Prior to the start of the tournament an opening ceremony was staged which featured Youth Basketball Guyana’s Co-Director Chris Bowman, Assistant Director of Sport Franklyn Wilson, and ExxonMobil Community Development Advisor Ryan Hoppie. The event is also sponsored by Edward B. Beharry Ltd, the National Sports Commission, and G-Boats GY. The competition continues today at the same venue with another round of matches.
