I was not surprised with the delay tactics used

Dear Editor,

Many in Guyana and around the world were interested in the outcome of the rape allegation against a serving minister.  If anyone was expecting prosecution, they were not really familiar with the mechanism in place to protect the rich and powerful in Guyana. I wasn’t surprised with the delay tactics used by the DPP by sending back the file to the Guyana Police Force for further investigation.

Apparently if you don’t have the right connections, you could be prosecuted very fast, many who were innocent and lots for frivolous matter. Out of curiosity, can the public be educated as to the reasons why the DPP sent the file back for further investigation? Who lapsed and would actions be taken against the errant individuals?

Editor, while the victim chose to sign a NFA, it tells me that her reluctance to seek justice would surely motivate other predators to commit similar acts, because justice is slow and one-sided in Guyana. I sincerely hope that the furor she caused is rewarding for her, especially the embarrassment she faced after making the allegations. Now, given all the happenings, will the accused remain on his job when his leave is finished? I shudder to think what treatment the staff at that ministry was enduring before the allegations surfaced.

Sincerely,

Sahadeo Bates
