Attoya Harvey took her talents to Trinidad and emerged the female overall winner for the CARICOM 10K road race on Sunday.
Staged in the west-central part of the island in Chaguanas, Harvey won the 16th edition of the event in her debut appearance.
The 17 year-old clocked 41m.58.6s to finish atop the podium finishing ahead of Samantha Shukla (43.21.7) and Laura Limery (44.54.1), the silver and bronze medalists.
Harvey shared that she was elated to win the top prize for Guyana in her first CARICOM 10K. “My coach was my inspiration for participating, he’s consistently motivating me to reach for my dreams”, she stated.
Harvey’s fellow countryman, Marlon Nicholson who won last year’s edition of the event in Suriname however, finished just off the podium in fourth overall for the event which was swept by a trio of Trinidadians.
Fellow Guyanese, Cleveland Thomas and Winston Missigher finished sixth and eighth in that order in the male category.
This year’s 10K marked the 16th edition and served as a pre-event for the Annual Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government, where CARICOM will celebrate its 50th anniversary. The inaugural CARICOM 10K was held in 2005 to commemorate the United Nations International Year of Sport and Physical Education. Nine CARICOM countries participated in the event, including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago.
In observance of CARICOM’s 50th Anniversary, the event returned to the original site of the signing of the Treaty, the Chaguaramas Convention Centre.
