Buxton Secondary was crowned the East Coast Demerara champion in the Digicel Schools Football Championship, defeating President’s College 2-1 in the final yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground (MOE), Carifesta Avenue.
Leon McFarlane opened the scoring for the Buxtonians in the 27th minute. Racing into the penalty area, McFarlane slotted his right footed effort into the back of the net after receiving a pass.
The lead would be increased two minutes later, as Ovid Brown etched his name on the scorer’s sheet. Receiving the ball outside the centre of the box, Brown uncorked a powerful strike which settled into the far corner.
President’s College eventually reduced the deficit under fortuitous circumstances in the 38th minute in the form of Shamar Barrington, who slotted into the back of the net after the ball struck a player and rebounded into his path inside the penalty area. Meanwhile, Vryman’s Erven recorded the largest margin of victory to date in the event, dismantling Central Corentyne 25-0 at the Scott’s School ground in the Region #6 segment.
