The First People of this country will not forget

Dear Editor,

Please permit me to share my thoughts. There is a misconception going around that it is only opposition supporters who are furious about how the rape and sodomy allegations again a government minister proceeded. This is especially true for hard core PPP supporters who are out on social media saying how the minister is being politically framed. But look closer, for there are many supporters, particularly among the indigenous population, who are very upset with how a fellow young woman has been treated. This heinous act has crossed all boundaries.

This is also coming hot on the heels of the Mahdia Dorms tragedy where 20 innocent indigenous lives were lost under the PPP government’s watch. For neither life changing incidents has any government official/s been held accountable. Today, thanks to social media, hinterland communities are kept abreast of what’s happening around them. Those in authority who feel that the First Peoples are not feeling pain and betrayal over these incidents are seriously miscalculating. We may not be very vocal but we also don’t forget.

A day of reckoning will come and these transgressions will have consequences. The PPP/C government is warned. You either do what is right and have your minister face the consequences of his actions or run the very high risk of being rejected in 2025. There is still time to get it right. But also be warned that 13% represents the difference between winning and losing. The First People of this country will not forget.

Sincerely,

M. Allicock
