Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliott has adopted a ‘managing by walking around’ strategy to enhance communication and facilitate improved decision making with prison staff and inmates at various prison locations.
According to a release from the Guyana Prison Service (GPS), Elliott visited the Lusignan Prison on Wednesday evening and conducted a walk-through as part of the ongoing night visits to various prisons countrywide.
More that 60 percent of the prison’s population resides at the Lusignan Prison, according the GPS and following the recent transfer of close to 700 inmates from the Holding Bay areas to the three new structures, overcrowding has been eliminated.
Currently, three other structures are being constructed and upon completion they will accommodate another 500 inmates.
Additionally, upgrades to the facility will accommodate a female prison, the prison’s vocational school, senior and junior officers living quarters and the infirmary annex, the GPS said.
