A mechanic of Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara died on Saturday evening after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car on the Unity Public Road.
The police said the dead man has been identified as 26-year-old Eon Joe Magrell. According to a police press release, the fatal accident occurred around 20:40 hrs on Saturday and it involved motor car #PTT 875, owned by Dennis Edward and driven at the time by Andre Pilgrim, a 48-year-old taxi driver, and a motorcycle (registration number unknown), ridden by Magrell.
Pilgrim reportedly told the police that he was proceeding east, along the northern side of the Unity public road, whilst the motorcycle was proceeding in the opposite direction with no front headlight on.
Apparently both vehicles were going at a fast rate, and Magrell, in the process of overtaking an unknown motor vehicle, collided with the front right side of PTT 875, causing Pilgrim to lose control and crash into a utility pole.
As a result of the collision, the police said, the motorcyclist fell onto the road surface and sustained injuries to his left leg and other parts of his body, whilst the driver sustained injuries to his right hand and other parts of his body.
Magrell was picked up in an unconscious condition with help from public-spirited citizens and taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital, where a doctor on duty determined that he had also sustained internal injuries. He died whilst receiving medical attention at the hospital, the police said.
The driver was removed from the car, in a conscious condition, with the help of the police and public-spirited citizens and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. A doctor on duty determined that he had sustained a fractured right hand and injuries to his body. He was admitted as a patient in stable condition.
Magrellt’s body is at Jerrick’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
