The unrepresented men were jointly charged with the murder of Leon Aswell Kum between Tuesday, July, 4 and Wednesday July, 5 at Kilcoy Squatting Area.
They were not required to plead to the charge and were remanded to prison.
Both men will return to the Albion Magistrate’s Court on July 26 for report.
Kum was found by his relatives lying face-down on the ground with lacerations across his throat and face in his shack last week. His relatives who also live in the same yard had said they heard a noise near his shack, after which they saw two men jump over the fence and escape.
Kum lived with his nephew, Michael Ramnarine and Michael’s wife in a shack located on the dam in the area.
Ramnarine’s mother-in-law, Sattie Ramotar, who lives opposite her son-in-law had told Stabroek News that on Tuesday last she spent most of her time at her son-in-law’s place. She related that in the evening Kum told her daughter that he would sleep in the hammock that is located under a shed near the shack since the place was hot. However, around 1 am, Ramotar related that she was cooking at her place when she heard a noise like an animal hitting the zinc sheeting.
According to the woman, the noise grew louder and she opened her window to see where the noise was coming from but didn’t see anything. When she opened her kitchen door to inquire where the noise was coming from, she saw Ramnarine running after someone in his yard.
Ramotar said she ran out of her home and headed for her bridge when she saw someone trying to escape as Ramnarine ran after him. She disclosed that Ramnarine had a cutlass in his hand but he was unable to catch the person who managed to escape on a bicycle. When she went over to the shack, she saw the now deceased in a slumped position with blood covering his neck and t-shirt but couldn’t see his injuries.
Kum was taken to the Port Mourant Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.
