PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Hosts Trinidad & Tobago are the champions of the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Under-19 Women’s Championship again.
A combination of the batting of Djenaba Joseph and the bowling of her West Indies Under-19 teammate Shalini Samaroo enabled T&T to clinch a 37-run win against Windward Islands in the final on on Saturday.
Chasing 107 to win at the Frank Worrell Memorial Ground on the St Augustine of the University of the West Indies, Samaroo grabbed three for 11 from her allotted six overs and Samara Ramnath two for 12 from her six overs, and the Windwards were bowled out for 69 in 27 overs in the 30 overs-a-side, One-day tournament. It was a heartbreaking loss for Windwards after they led the league table, but only left-hander Zaida James with the top score of 25, and her captain and West Indies Women’s teammate Jannillea Glasgow with 12 reached double figures in a second wicket stand of 43.
Earlier, Joseph, opening the batting, led the way with 43 and was one of only two batsmen that reached double figures before T&T were bowled out for 106 in 28.5 overs after they were put in to bat.
Amirah Gilbert was the pick of the Windwards bowlers, taking four for 19 from 3.5 overs, and Selena Ross supported with two for 12 from five overs.
