Police are investigating a fire of unknown origin that is believed to have claimed the life of 38-year-old fisherman, Terry Lall, and partially destroyed his Paradise, Essequibo home on Sunday night.

Police enquiries disclosed that Lall lived alone in a one-flat concrete house west of the Paradise Public Road, Essequibo Coast. According to Lall’s sister, Somattie Persaud, a 41-year-old security guard who lives in the same yard, at around 1300hrs on Sunday, Lall left his home and went to Lake Mainstay. Somattie said that about 1900hrs she saw her brother return and enter his house. She said that he seemed under the influence of alcohol at the time.

After the fire

At around 2130hrs, Somattie, who was at her home at the time, said she saw fire coming from her brother’s home and summoned both the Fire Service and the Police. According to the police release, the Region’s fire department immediately went into action and extinguished the fire, but by then, the western half of the house had been completely destroyed.

The police release noted that burnt human remains, suspected to be that of Lall, were seen among the debris and that the fire is believed to have resulted in Lall’s death. The remains were escorted to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary where a post mortem examination will be conducted.
