Rice farmers in Black Bush Polder (BBP), Corentyne and neighbouring areas are nearing their harvesting period and with over 64,000 acres under cultivation presently in Region Six a “good crop” is expected to be reaped.
Regional Chairman, David Armogan told Stabroek News that the rice farmers within BBP are expected to harvest in the next two weeks’ time with the overall consensus being that a “good crop” is expected.
According to Armogan, a paddy bug infestation which was reported at the last statutory meeting for the Regional Democratic Council of Region Six has since been investigated and luckily it turned out not to be major.
“It was checked out but it is not as pronounced as would have led to a situation that people would lose substantially in the crop”, he said.
Meanwhile, rice farmers within Black Bush Polder when contacted also noted the same stressing that they are hopeful for a successful harvesting period.
