A truck driver and two porters are in custody assisting with an investigation after they were nabbed with 702 grammes of cannabis at Sherima Police Station yesterday morning, according to a Guyana Police Force release.
Efforts are being made to contact the owner of the truck.
At the time of the discovery, the driver of the lorry was Andre Hollingsworth, a 47-year-old from Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and there were two porters: Scott Evans, 22, and Leroy Evans, 39, both of whom reside at Kuru Kuru on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
A police release stated that about 08.30 hours yesterday, ranks were on duty at Sherima Police Station when the lorry, GWW 8651, was stopped for a routine check. One of the ranks searched the driver, porters, and their belongings, but nothing illegal was found. A rank then searched the tray of the truck and found white plastic, containing two transparent bulky parcels with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The driver and two porters were subsequently arrested but they all denied knowledge of the cannabis. They told police that the truck belonged to a resident of Kuru Kuru, and that they were hired on Monday to take the truck to Puruni Landing.
The men indicated that they collected the truck at 03.00 hours yesterday and travelled to Sherima Police Station where the narcotic was found.
They were then taken to the Bartica Police Station, where the narcotic was weighed in their presence and amounted to 702 grammes.
