Second vice-president of Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) and former national cricketer, Steven Jacobs urged the youngsters to pay keen attention while making life-long friends as the Club opened its annual summer camp on Monday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony at the club’s Thomas Land location, Jacobs said, “It’s a jam-packed programme and I urge each and every one of you to pay keen attention to every single thing that will be taught because it is very important. I was once sitting where you are with a lot of expectations, high hope and passion. I think it is important when you come to these academies you enjoy every moment and meet a lot of new friends because they will be life-long friends.”

With the camp catering to both male and females between the ages of eight and 18 years, it will run from Monday to Friday between the hours of 09.00 and 15.00 hours. It will conclude on the 29th. Persons who are desirous of joining can uplift a form from Jacobs Jewelry at their Pike Street, Kitty location, the club’s office or Exotic Prints on Durban Street.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr. highlighted that the Ministry will provide gears for any of those children who make it to the national under-17 squad.

“Last year for example, I stressed on winning and I would like to congratulate the club for the number of successes you had leading into the under-13s and under-15s. I am going to challenge you now that any of those make it to the under-17 camp as national players can come and get gear from the Ministry,” He said.

Ramson reckoned, “Now you have a good opportunity to focus on the progress. Making the inter-county team and making the Guyana team at an early age signals the talent potential, it is still potential, even though it is some degree of achievement, I have seen in my lifetime and there has been many people who have not converted their potential even though early signal of their potential were indicated, they did not convert that into making it to the big leagues.”
