Senior Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh yesterday tabled an Order and successfully piloted the Motion to remove the 20 percent tax on cell phones, which was endorsed by the National Assembly.
A release from the Ministry of Finance noted that this was in keeping with the announcement made by President Irfaan Ali on June 9 2023.
President Ali had noted then that the PPP/C government remains committed to bridging the divide in the country.
“One of the important things about the future is the use of technology. A phone is no longer just to make a phone call; people are doing degrees on their phone, and people are conducting business on their phone,” he had said. Ali recognised that phones are an integral part of the transformation of Guyana.
