The Petra Organization, the coordinators of the 8th edition of the Digicel Schools Football Competition, officially released the Round of 32 fixtures which will serve as the start of the event’s National Championships yesterday at the Brandsville Hotel, Prashad Nagar.
The event which is penciled to commence on the 29th, will culminate on August 13th at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.
Co-Director of the Petra Organization Troy Mendonca said that the tournament has been an exhilarating experience, noting that the Region #7 zonal final between Bartica and DC Caesar Fox Secondary on July 22nd serve as a precursor to the national elimination round.
According to Mendonca, the teams were seeded in the national segment based on the strength of schedule model, as the coordinating team analyzed the respective zones to create a ranking system.
Unlike previous editions, a round of 32 will be introduced to commence the national championship. As such, Georgetown will be represented by 13 schools whilst Region #3 and #6 will feature two representatives.
Winner of the event will receive $1,000,000 towards a school project and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth place finishers will pocket $500,000, $300,000, and $200,000 respectively towards a school initiative and the corresponding trophies.
On the individual side, prizes will also be awarded to the Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, and Most Valuable Player. Uniforms will be provided to the quarter-finalists in each section. The event will be played under the motto of a ‘Unite, Develop, Excel’.
