Dear Editor,
In the realm of politics, the role of a leader is to serve in the best interests of the people, to be a beacon of hope, and to possess unwavering integrity. However, it is disheartening to observe the downfall of a once-promising figure like Bharrat Jagdeo, the Vice President of Guyana, who has seemingly lost his soul and conscience for the Guyanese people. What was once a hopeful journey of progress and development has now been marred by questionable actions and a lack of moral compass, leaving the nation in a state of disappointment and disillusionment.
One of the most glaring indications of Jagdeo’s moral decline is his blatant abuse of power and propensity for political manipulation. Instead of utilizing his position to foster unity and uplift the nation, he has chosen to prioritize personal and party interests over the welfare of the Guyanese people. Under his leadership, cronyism has become the norm, with key positions being filled by individuals loyal to him rather than those qualified for the job. This nepotistic approach has eroded public trust and hindered the growth of the nation.
Jagdeo’s tenure has also been characterized by a shocking disregard for the environment and sustainable development. Despite Guyana’s rich biodiversity and immense potential for eco-tourism, PPP administration has pursued short-sighted policies that prioritize immediate economic gains over long-term ecological preservation. The exploitation of natural resources, such as logging and mining, has not only caused irreversible damage to the environment but has also impacted indigenous communities who depend on these resources for their livelihoods. This lack of consideration for the environment showcases a complete abandonment of conscience and a failure to safeguard the Guyanese people’s future well-being.
Furthermore, the PPP administration has been plagued by allegations of corruption and a lack of accountability. Transparency and good governance have taken a back seat, with reports of embezzlement, bribery, and kickbacks. Instead of ensuring that public funds are utilized for the betterment of the country, these scandals have allowed a select few to profit at the expense of the Guyanese people. Such actions not only reflect a loss of moral values but also undermine the faith citizens’ place in their leaders and institutions, perpetuating a culture of impunity and diminishing the nation’s progress.
Bharrat Jagdeo’s journey, from a promising leader to a lost soul and conscience for the Guyanese people, is a tragic tale of power corrupting an individual’s principles and moral compass. The PPP’s abuse of power, manipulation of the political system, negligence toward the environment, and involvement in corruption have brought about a sense of disillusionment and disappointment among the Guyanese people. The nation deserves leaders who prioritize the welfare of its citizens and work tirelessly to ensure a better future. It is imperative for the Guyanese people to recognize Jagdeo’s moral decline and demand leadership that is committed to integrity, accountability, and progress. Only then can Guyana reclaim its path toward a brighter and more prosperous future.
Sincerely,
Pt. Ubraj Narine, JP, COA
