The Ministry of Public Works yesterday said that teams have been mobilized and systems put in place to ensure the smooth shuttling of passengers and goods across the Demerara River.
A press release from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) said that these systems are in response to the closing of the Demerara Harbour Bridge to all traffic from midnight last night to Thursday midnight to facilitate the replacing of the damaged Span 9 of the bridge.
According to the MARAD press release, the maritime shuttling system will be done in three parts. For persons residing south of the Demerara Harbour Bridge on the West Bank of the Demerara River up to Canal #2 their crossing will be at the Demerara River Bridge. This West Bank water taxi service will on and offload on the East Bank end of the Harbour Bridge and on the western end of the Bridge. Commuters residing beyond Canal #2 will use the water taxi service which will on and offload opposite the Wales Police Station on the West Bank and similarly on and offload at Market Street, Grove on the East Bank Demerara.
