Man wanted over killing of guard turns self in

Twenty-two-year-old Ossaffo Chester, who was wanted by police in relation to murder committed on Gerald Sobers, turned himself in at the Cove and John Police Station yesterday afternoon.

On July 3, Chester allegedly shot Sobers in the neck causing him to be hospitalised for three weeks. As a result of the gunshot wound Sobers was paralysed from neck down and placed on life support. He succumbed to his injuries last Saturday.

Sobers known as ‘Eddie’, was a 25-year-old security guard of Paradise East Coast Demerara. Both Chester and Sobers were employed at OP Security Services (OPPS.)

Chester was employed with the security company when he was involved in the shooting incident. Stabroek News was reliably informed that he was carrying a service weapon, property of OPPS. He subsequently resigned after the incident occurred, while Sobers was hospitalised.

Persaud (only name given) of OP Security Service (OPSS), when contacted by Stabroek News, related that Gerald Sobers had been employed with OPSS for only a few days and was on probation. He further stated that he had been unaware of the shooting incident but knew that Gerald had not been at work.

Prior to the incident, some six weeks ago, Sober and Chester were involved in a heated argument over an electric bike. Chester then drew his firearm and pointed it at Sobers. At the time of the incident Chester was on duty at a supermarket; the owner of the supermarket had then called the police and both men were arrested. They were granted bail and were expected to appear before the court on Wednesday last.
