Police patrol nabs BV taxi driver with suspected cannabis

A 33-year-old Beterverwagting (BV), East Coast Demerara taxi driver was yesterday arrested after he was found with 47.3 grams of suspected cannabis. 

Police say at about 10 am ranks were on mobile patrol duty at BV when they observed a Toyota Premio, HD 740 drive out of a known drug yard.

The ranks signalled the driver of the car to stop but he refused to comply and drove away. He was identified as 33-year-old Earlson Murray of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara.

The patrol pursued him and observed the driver throw a black plastic bag out of the driver’s side window. They retrieved the black plastic bag and upon checking inside, leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found.

The ranks continued to pursue the car until it came to a halt when the driver crashed into the police vehicle.

A search was conducted of the vehicle, but nothing illegal was found. Murray was told of the offences committed, cautioned and arrested. He was escorted to the Beterverwagting Police Station, where the suspected narcotic was weighed in his presence and amounted to 47.3 grams.

He is currently in custody pending charges.
