A 36-year-old janitor of Leguan Island, Essequibo River, drowned after she fell into the river while trying to catch a bow rope to secure on the rail of the Leguan Stelling.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Rabonie Sahoye, of La Bagatelle, Leguan, died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning.
According to a police report, last Friday at about 17:30 hours him, Sahoye, her common-law partner, 37 year-old Ravendra Singh, and her brother Travis Sahoye departed the Leguan Island stelling in a water taxi to drop Travis off at Parika. Singh said that after dropping Travis off, they returned to the Leguan stelling, arriving there at about 19:30 hours. Singh stated that as he moored the boat, Sahoye came out and went on to the stelling at the rails, where he threw the bow rope to her for her to tie same on the rail. Sahoye leaned over to catch the rope but instead fell into the river.
Singh said he immediately jumped into the river in a bid to rescue Sahoye but that proved futile. An alarm was raised and other persons nearby also jumped into the river in search of Sahoye. The incident was reported to the police. The police said that last Saturday a call was received at approximately 12:50 hours about a female lying face down at a Leguan beach. The body was later identified as that of Sahoye.
