Guyana’s Tianna Springer struck gold in the women’s 400m final as local athletes crowded the podium yesterday at the ongoing Youth Commonwealth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
Springer, this year’s CARIFTA Games and South American U-20 Championships gold medalist, crossed the tape at the Hasely Crawford stadium in a blistering 53.55s to add another international gold medal to her resume.
The 16-year-old track standout led England’s Charlotte Henrich (53.65s) and fellow Guyanese, Narissa McPherson (54.82s) onto the podium.
In the men’s version of the event, Malachi Austin earned a silver medal to bring Guyana’s medal tally to three so far at the seventh edition of the Games.
Austin clocked a personal best 47.97s for the quarter-mile event which was won by Nigeria’s Uchenna Ogazi in 46.99s. Alexander Beck from England snared the bronze medal in 48.20s.
Earlier on the track, Attoya Harvey finished 11th in the women’s 1500m final in 4:45.10s.
