Two persons were held by police at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo on Tuesday after three firearms and over 170 rounds of ammunition were found in their house.
The police said in a release that the operation was carried out on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, between 11:50 am and 1:30 pm. It was led by an Assistant Superintendent and targeted the residence of Delon Osborne, alias ‘Gizmo’, a 35-year-old labourer residing at Lot 2 Archer Street, Vergenoegen.
Police arrived at Osborne’s residence and made contact with him and Joyann Sobers, a 22-year-old woman who is the mother of Osborne’s child. Armed with information suggesting the presence of narcotics, firearms and ammunition within the premises, the police officers explained their intent. The police say that Osborne willingly consented to the search, allowing officers to enter his residence.
The search, conducted in the presence of Osborne and Sobers, yielded three guns and the ammunition.
A concealed .32 calibre firearm was found beneath a mattress on a bedroom bed. The firearm’s serial number had been filed off. The accompanying magazine contained nine live matching rounds of ammunition.
An improvised shotgun was found behind a chair in the same bedroom.
A third firearm – a silver and black .32 calibre, its serial number similarly effaced – was located in close proximity to a red Victoria’s Secret handbag on the bed. This firearm’s magazine contained 14 live .32 rounds of ammunition.
The police added that 150 live suspected 9mm rounds of ammunition were discovered within a bulky black plastic bag located in the kitchen area.
Osborne and Sobers, in response to inquiries, denied possessing valid firearm licences for any of the recovered weapons. Consequently, both were taken into police custody and transported to the Leonora Police Station.
Transparent plastic evidence bags were utilized to store each item, and the evidence was subsequently entrusted to the Station Sergeant for proper safekeeping and documentation.
At the same address, the police also unearthed two motorcycles believed to be associated with armed robberies within the division.
